PSA publishes annual report for 2023/24

The Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) has published its Annual Report and Impact Report for 2023/24.

The reports outline how the association has worked towards its strategic priorities and outlines how it will direct its activity over the next three years.

With a clear focus on influencing positive change in areas supporting members, the wider workforce and policing’s impact on communities, the reports reflect the association’s efforts and achievements across a broad range of critical issues for policing.

In his annual report foreword, President Nick Smart says:

“As acting president since October 2023, I have taken the baton from Paul Fotheringham, who did a fantastic job as leader of the association for 18 months, and who began a great deal of positive change in a number of key areas for our members and the wider workforce.

It is this positive change, that has tangible impacts for those we represent, that I am most proud of, and is something I hope to have helped progress in my time in this role.

Once again, we have seen a year of complex change and challenge for policing. As superintendents, our members are deeply embedded in these matters, both at senior operational and strategic levels, and it is our duty as an association to support them, whether that’s through pushing for fair pay and conditions, developing new ways to support wellbeing, insisting on fair processes and governance procedures, or influencing legal powers based on the experiences of those tasked with keeping people safe.

Last year’s conference brought together leading voices in policing to discuss key issues such as valuing difference, integrity, trust and confidence and operational best practice. This is always a proud moment for our small team, which works tirelessly to bring together what is one of the most important events in the policing calendar, and an opportunity for our members to network and to contribute to the national narrative on their Service. We look forward to the 2024 conference.

One of the biggest areas of concern for us as a staff association has been the declining wellbeing and morale of our people over recent years, and something that is impacted by pay, pensions, demand, feelings of value and the high levels of responsibility they hold.  It is something that we have focused heavily on in our pro-active work to support members and an area where we plan to make further impact in the coming year.”
