Superintendent Sara Crane has been elected as the new Vice President of the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA).
Sara, who is a serving officer at Devon & Cornwall Police, was elected into the post at the meeting of the PSA’s National Executive Committee held on the 10th January. Sara will begin her three-year term on the 12th March, taking over from Chief Superintendent Harvi Khatkar, who has held the role since March 2022.
Sara has 29 year’s service, all with Devon & Cornwall Police, and has held a variety of roles as superintendent over the past 7 years, including local policing commander in Cornwall, and has most recently served as Cornwall partnership superintendent.
Sara was elected as the PSA’s gender inclusion lead in 2023, engaging with female PSA members to understand the current issues and ensure they are heard at the appropriate forums and influence change. She was also secretary of Devon & Cornwall PSA Branch for four years before becoming branch chair last year.
During the COVID-19 response, Sara was seconded to NPOCC as temporary chief superintendent, to lead Operation Talla (NPCC response to COVID-19) Recovery, Reform and Learning Programme. Prior to joining the NPCC full-time, Sara worked on G7, working with partnerships to ensure impacts from G7 on daily business were mitigated.
Sara said: “I’m extremely pleased to be elected into this position, which I see as so important for our members, and also the wider workforce.
“Over the past year, I’ve worked with the national team as the gender inclusion lead, engaging with members to hear their views and experiences. We’ve worked to ensure that stakeholders and policy makers are influenced with this lived experience, to improve policy, practice and working life, not just for our members, but also for the wider workforce.
“I’d like to thank Harvi for everything she has done for the association over the past two years. As vice president, I look forward to expanding this positive work, whilst supporting the national team on key areas of importance for policing. The PSA has a strong reputation and influence within our sector and I will be proud to help continue to build on this over the next three years.”
Sara will support Acting President Nick Smart. The substantive post of president remains vacant, pending an election process in June 2024.
