Expression of Interest - Volunteer Strategic Advisor

The Police Superintendents' Association (PSA) is inviting expressions of interest for a Volunteer Strategic Advisor to support our national work which includes inclusion across policing.

This is an external, independent advisory role. It is open to individuals from outside policing who bring relevant professional or lived experience and a strong understanding of inclusion, equality and organisational culture.

Role purpose

The Volunteer Strategic Advisor for Inclusion will provide independent strategic advice and challenge to the PSA on inclusion related matters. The role will support thoughtful, evidence-informed decision making and help strengthen policing legitimacy, trust and fairness.

This is not a senior leadership role and does not carry line management or operational responsibilities. It is a voluntary, advisory position, focused on insight, influence and constructive challenge.

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide strategic advice and guidance to the PSA on inclusion, equality, fairness and organisational culture.
  2. Act as a critical friend, offering challenge and support to national policing leaders where appropriate.
  3. Contribute to the development and review of PSA positions, priorities or policy thinking on inclusion.
  4. Support horizon scanning and future thinking on emerging inclusion issues relevant to policing.
  5. Share external perspectives, good practice and learning from across sectors where relevant.
  6. Maintain confidentiality, independence and professional integrity at all times.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking individuals who are external to policing and can bring credibility, independence and insight.

You may come from academia, the voluntary or community sector, public services, professional practice or lived experience advocacy. You do not need to hold a senior leadership role to apply.

Applicants are likely to demonstrate the following:

  1. A strong understanding of inclusion, equality and systemic fairness.
  2. Experience of advising organisations, boards or senior decision makers, formally or informally.
  3. Confidence to offer respectful, evidence based challenge.
  4. An ability to think strategically and at a national or system level.
  5. A strong understanding of equality impacts arising from the interaction of multiple personal and protected characteristics.
  6. Able to identify when specialist advice or additional resources are required to ensure inclusive, fair and proportionate outcomes.
  7. A clear commitment to ethical practice, public trust and social responsibility.
  8. Strong communication, judgement and interpersonal skills.

Vetting requirement

The successful applicant will be required to undergo appropriate police vetting. Appointment is subject to successful vetting clearance and ongoing compliance with vetting requirements.

Time commitment and term

This is a voluntary, unpaid role, with expenses being paid.

The expected time commitment is flexible and proportionate, typically involving periodic meetings, including meetings of the National Executive Committee, preparation time and occasional ad hoc advice.

The initial term will be for 12 months, with the option to extend by mutual agreement.
